Survivors of a tragic shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa have disclosed that forty-one migrants lost their lives in the incident. The survivors, hailing from the Ivory Coast and Guinea, recounted that the ill-fated boat departed from Sfax, Tunisia, and foundered during its journey to Italy.

These four individuals, who managed to survive the ordeal, successfully reached Lampedusa on Wednesday. This heartbreaking incident underscores the perilous nature of the North Africa to Europe migration route, with over 1,800 lives lost this year alone.

Tunisian authorities have noted that Sfax, situated approximately 80 miles (130km) from Lampedusa, remains a frequently chosen departure point for migrants seeking refuge and better prospects in Europe.

Recent days have witnessed a concerted effort by Italian patrol vessels and humanitarian organizations to rescue and assist approximately 2,000 individuals who have arrived on Lampedusa.
